Super Spacer soars in Denmark’s eco-friendly Maersk Tower

Super Spacer TriSeal has formed a crucial part of one of Europe’s most eco-friendly buildings.

The Maersk Tower, home to the medical laboratories of the University of Copenhagen, was built in line with Denmark’s historic commitment to becoming 100% carbon neutral by 2050.

It became an instant landmark when it was completed last year thanks to its striking copper shell, the work of superstar architects C. F. Møller and Vienna engineering experts Waagner-Biro.

The futuristic structure incorporates resource-saving measures that include automatic LED lighting, a state-of-the-art eco-friendly cooling system, and rainwater collection for toilet flushing and garden irrigation.

Three-thousand vertical copper-clad fins act as both solar shading and wind protection for the building’s 15 storeys of cylindrically curved triple-glazed facades – where Edgetech’s Super Spacer TriSeal plays a critical role in delivering the building’s exceptional thermal efficiency.

Super Spacer soars as part of iconic addition to Dubai skyline

The Opus Super Spacer ProjectThe 21-storey tower was the vision of the late Zaha Hadid, the celebrated Iraqi-born architect known for her ground-breaking modern designs. Her work on ‘The Opus’ was characteristically ambitious. She envisaged a hollowed-out cube, apparently floating in mid-air – and the finished result is strikingly close to her original idea, pushing physical and technological boundaries to achieve its extraordinary melting ice-cube shape.

Bringing such a bold and outlandish vision to life required world-leading expertise – which is how Edgetech, and its high-performance Super Spacer® TriSeal™, became involved in the project.

Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson commented: ‘The Opus is quite simply one of the most staggering and ambitious architectural projects attempted this decade.

Chris Alderson, Edgetech UK Managing Director“It’s got a 6,000 square-metre flowing glass facade, a curved, 38-metre long, earthquake-proof glass bridge connecting two towers, and at night the structure is lit up by thousands of individually-controlled LEDs. The bridge section weights 1,000 tonnes alone.

“The building’s central ‘void’ section consists of 4,554 irregularly-shaped dark blue IGUs, the vast majority of which were completely unique. The lower end of that void is bordered by a freely formed glass roof over a multi-story atrium.

“All in all, it was an enormous undertaking – requiring 3D modelling accurate down to the last millimetre, curved aluminium profiles, fastening elements and vast numbers of glass units. More than 10,000 individually curved aluminium profiles were supplied from Denmark and the Netherlands, the glass units were produced in three factories in China, and ultimately the entire 3D puzzle had to be precisely pieced together on the construction site.

“And all that glass called for a very specific type of spacer bar. Firstly, they couldn’t use automated application – virtually every IGU used on the project was a different shape. Secondly, rigid spacers were out of the question – they couldn’t practically be moulded into the weird and wonderful shapes that were required.

“And thirdly, they needed something that offered the highest possible level of performance. In hot climates, in particular, a warm edge spacer has to work hard to hermetically seal the space between the panes. Due to the thermal interaction between hot sunlight and shadows, strong mechanical forces permanently act on the edge compound due to the movement of the glass. What’s more, especially in Dubai, where summer temperatures regularly top 40 degrees Celsius, thermally efficient glazing plays a vital role in keeping the heat out, and the air conditioning in.

“That’s why our premium flexible spacer, TriSeal, was chosen. It is designed specifically for the commercial market, capable of meeting the extremely demanding standards of an architectural masterpiece. It offers world-class performance with its unique triple seal design, incorporating an inner acrylic adhesive seal for immediate unit handling, a polyisobutylene primary seal for enhanced gas retention and low moisture vapour transmission, and an outer silicone seal for structural strength and durability. The flexible foam structure handles both curved profiles and rectangles with ease, while at the same time enabling outstanding thermal efficiency.

“It was the perfect fit for an astounding project – one we were absolutely delighted to be a part of.”

FENESTRATION BAU China brings international interest

Warm edge experts Edgetech have returned from China’s biggest glazing expo, FENESTRATION BAU, with over a hundred promising leads.

The Chinese construction sector has seen phenomenal growth over the past decade – and while new-build is beginning to slow, domestic and commercial refurbishment is still in huge demand.

What’s more, both homeowners and the Chinese business community are becoming increasingly interested in thermally efficient products – and, by extension, warm edge spacer technology.

Held each year in Beijing or Shanghai, the massive trade show reliably draws visitors in excess of thirty thousand, and this year featured 800 exhibiting companies from over thirty countries.

Edgetech UK’s Parent Company Quanex to Expand Ohio Manufacturing Facility

Edgetech UK’s parent company Quanex Building Products Corporation (NYSE:NX) has announced plans to expand its Cambridge, Ohio, insulating glass (IG) systems facility, in anticipation of significant growth with its Super Spacer® and Dura® Platforms.

The expansion will add approximately 60,000 square feet to the facility for a total of approximately 477,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space, allowing the company to better utilise existing plant infrastructure for capacity improvements. The expansion will enable Quanex to deliver on heightened projected demand for IG systems over the next five years.

“This expansion is the result of two years of effort working with equipment manufacturers to design equipment that can apply our flexible warm edge spacer at the same production rates as metal based box spacer, but with significantly less labour,” said Bill Griffiths, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Quanex Building Products. “This in turn puts Quanex in a position to deliver a quality, energy efficient window component to high volume producers, which opens up a larger potential market for our energy efficient spacer production lines.”

Quanex plans to invest approximately $5 million over the next five years to add six new production lines, utilised for both Super Spacer and Dura Platform production, increasing capacity of the facility by 15 percent, as well as adding significant additional warehouse space for their ancillary product lines. Quanex anticipates that the facility will be complete and in use by January 2017.

“We’ll be working hard throughout this year to ensure the updated, expanded space is fully operational by the beginning of 2017,” added George Wilson, president, IG Systems, Quanex. “We’re looking forward to more effectively meeting growing customer demand with Super Spacer, Dura Platform and innovative new ways of production.”

Sapphire Glass takes Edgetech’s heritage overseas

Sapphire Glass Merchants Ltd has won a £1.4 million contract to supply slim, low sightline insulated glass units to Lithuania using Super Spacer Heritage manufactured by Edgetech, a Quanex company. The Lithuania contract follows another substantial order of 1,500 Super Spacer Heritage units to Compass Windows in Northern Ireland.

“Due to the significant increase in sales for slim Super Spacer Heritage units, we have now introduced the product to all of our customers and had a fantastic response in sales,” says Stefan O’Meara director of Sapphire Glass Merchants.

“There is a growing demand for warm edge products that can be used in conservation areas or to achieve a traditional look and the slim 4mm option from Super Spacer Heritage works really well. The architect for the Lithuania project saw a Super Spacer Heritage installation we had recently finished in Pimlico and specified the product.”

The neutral appearance of Super Spacer Heritage and 3mm depth for ultra slim sightlines help it to blend with any frame finish. It facilitates the use of Low E glass double glazing where there was previously only space for single glazing, reducing U-values from typically around 5.6 W/m²K to below 2. The acrylic adhesive and multi-layer vapour barrier backing on the pre-desiccated silicone foam spacer are combined with Bostik 5000 hot melt butyl secondary sealant supplied by Edgetech to provide outstanding durability and gas retention.

Stefan adds: “We’ve been customers of Edgetech for five years now using its Super Spacer products and started using the Heritage product two years ago. Working with Edgetech to supply Super Spacer Heritage has helped us to win two key contracts this year and we’re now hoping to expand in the New Year with a second Super Spacer line.”

“Speaking to customers, standard aluminium or warm edge spacer bars can intrude over the low bead line of traditional style windows. Super Spacer Heritage reduces the sightline to eradicate the problem. We’re also hoping to add more colour options in the New Year,” says Alan Fielder, sales and marketing director at Edgetech. “We’re pleased to be supporting a long-standing customer in winning some great contracts.”
