Triple Passive House Certification for Edgetech UK

Edgetech UK, the leading voice for energy efficient windows, has been accredited with Passive House certification for three of its Super Spacer® products, reflecting its total commitment to energy performance in buildings.

Super Spacer Premium has been certified with the Passive House Institute’s best available energy efficiency class stamp of phA+ whilst Super Spacer TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium and Super Spacer TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium Plus have both been accredited with phA standard.

All three of Edgetech’s spacer bars significantly exceeded the required minimum specific edge resistance and were certified for the Arctic climate component efficiency class stamp, as well as for all climate zones with lower demands.

Alan Fielder, Sales & Marketing Director at Edgetech UK said: “I’m delighted to hear that the Passive House Institute has recognised that these spacer bars are eligible for use under the Passive House standard – a simple approach to building super energy efficient homes.”

While Passive House only accounts for a small percentage of buildings in the UK, many more developers and specifiers look for products that offer top thermal efficiency.

The Passive House Institute also considers hygiene when certifying spacer bar components.
By reducing condensation and maintaining comfortable humidity levels, Super Spacer can
virtually eliminate the potential breeding ground for mould growth and associated health
problems. Super Spacer’s qualities have made it popular for hospitals and medical facilities
all over the world.

Alan continues: “This acknowledgement from the Passive House Institute further secures
Edgetech’s place as the leading voice for energy efficient windows.”

Super Spacer Alpha wins Manufacturing Innovation Award

Launched just six months ago, Super Spacer Alpha® has won Manufacturing Innovation of the year in
Insider’s Made in the Midlands Awards. The new premium warm edge flexible spacer bar manufactured
by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, took the top spot for innovation.

“To win for a brand new product is superb,” says Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing, who collected the winning trophy at the award ceremony on 20 May. “Super Spacer Alpha’s innovative design came through reverse engineering Super Spacer. We developed a new profile shape, creating the most thermally efficient spacer bar. The design is set to provide major benefits to customers and manufacturers using it can make highly energy efficient units without any increase in cost.”

Super Spacer Alpha offers improved performance and creates a strong reason for manufacturers upgrading equipment to switch over. Edgetech already has advance orders valued at £1 million a year.

The Midlands is at the heart of UK manufacturing and competition for the award was strong. This was recognised by the award organisers Insider Media. Of Edgetech’s winning product, Super Spacer Alpha, judges wrote: “Coventry-based Edgetech’s latest innovation is the most thermally efficient insulated glass unit spacer bar in the world, giving customers up to 66 percent increase in productivity and 20 percent reduction in sealant usage. The judges were delighted to see so many companies putting innovation at the heart of their businesses. But Edgetech’s work in the glazing industry gave it the real edge.”

Edgetech’s Marketing Manager Charlotte Davies joined Alan to collect the coveted prize from host Declan Curry at the NEC’s Hilton Metropole at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 20 May. For a full list of winners and finalists go to:

1,000,000 Super Spacer units milestone for Padiham Glass

The automated Edgetech Super Spacer line has gone through the milestone of 1,000,000 units at Lancashire based Padiham Glass, manufacturers of high performance insulating glass units. Starting with a manual Super Spacer line, the fully automated Forel line was installed as part of the £2million expansion in 2007.

Managing Director for Edgetech UK, a Quanex Company, Andy Jones congratulated the team at Padiham Glass: “As one of the first companies to offer Super Spacer, this is a great achievement.”

The significant occasion may have been missed if it wasn’t for an eagle-eyed analyst. During an audit he told Wes Clarkson, Padiham Glass’ Sales Director, the million was close. Wes said: “We were on the lookout to see what customer order would be on the Super Spacer line as we went through the one million mark. It’s really appropriate that it was one of our longest-standing customers Darwen Windows.”

To mark this special occasion, a magnum of Champagne was presented to Bill Ainsworth, Managing Director of Darwen Windows. Bill said: “We’ve always had a very good relationship with the team at Padiham Glass. We get high-quality products with competitive pricing and we have always found the service to be excellent. I’m sure the relationship between our businesses will continue well into the next million.”

“Reaching this milestone in our 35th anniversary year is great for Padiham,” adds Wes. “We manufacture to very high standards and hitting the million mark in warm edge glass units shows we can depend on Edgetech Super Spacer to perform consistently.”

Super Spacer Heritage moves into million pound apartments

Slenderpane Ltd has installed 450 slim sash windows using Edgetech’s Super Spacer® Heritage for award winning developer, Linden Homes’ refurbishment of Ashlar Court into luxury apartments in Hammersmith.

With apartment prices starting at £750,000, Linden Homes demanded traditional timber windows in keeping with the 1930s Art Deco Grade II listed building that would also deliver better energy efficiency. Using Super Spacer Heritage from Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, Slenderpane was able to replicate the aesthetics of the existing single pane windows with new slim double glazed timber sash windows from sister company Herald Joinery.

The development has won high praise and has been commended in The Sunday Times British Home Awards 2014 and What House? Awards 2014.

David Weston, Managing Director of Slenderpane explains: “By combining bespoke joinery with Super Spacer Heritage slim insulated glass units we were able to closely match the original windows. This helped us to beat the competition offering standard window designs.

“Customers like the aesthetics of what we do and a big part of that is down to the slim design, low sightlines and neutral appearance we can achieve using Super Spacer Heritage. Since completing Ashlar Court we have won a second contract with Linden Homes for 80 slim double glazed sash windows for new housing in the regeneration of Battersea Police Station.”

There’s growing demand from architects and developers to improve thermal efficiency of windows in conservation refurbishment. David adds: “With Super Spacer Heritage we can offer glass units down to 11mm wide. We have used it since Slenderpane started making slim units in 2010.”

Edgetech has now launched a white version of Super Spacer Heritage to create the most authentic appearance possible for period style windows.

Sapphire Glass takes Edgetech’s heritage overseas

Sapphire Glass Merchants Ltd has won a £1.4 million contract to supply slim, low sightline insulated glass units to Lithuania using Super Spacer Heritage manufactured by Edgetech, a Quanex company. The Lithuania contract follows another substantial order of 1,500 Super Spacer Heritage units to Compass Windows in Northern Ireland.

“Due to the significant increase in sales for slim Super Spacer Heritage units, we have now introduced the product to all of our customers and had a fantastic response in sales,” says Stefan O’Meara director of Sapphire Glass Merchants.

“There is a growing demand for warm edge products that can be used in conservation areas or to achieve a traditional look and the slim 4mm option from Super Spacer Heritage works really well. The architect for the Lithuania project saw a Super Spacer Heritage installation we had recently finished in Pimlico and specified the product.”

The neutral appearance of Super Spacer Heritage and 3mm depth for ultra slim sightlines help it to blend with any frame finish. It facilitates the use of Low E glass double glazing where there was previously only space for single glazing, reducing U-values from typically around 5.6 W/m²K to below 2. The acrylic adhesive and multi-layer vapour barrier backing on the pre-desiccated silicone foam spacer are combined with Bostik 5000 hot melt butyl secondary sealant supplied by Edgetech to provide outstanding durability and gas retention.

Stefan adds: “We’ve been customers of Edgetech for five years now using its Super Spacer products and started using the Heritage product two years ago. Working with Edgetech to supply Super Spacer Heritage has helped us to win two key contracts this year and we’re now hoping to expand in the New Year with a second Super Spacer line.”

“Speaking to customers, standard aluminium or warm edge spacer bars can intrude over the low bead line of traditional style windows. Super Spacer Heritage reduces the sightline to eradicate the problem. We’re also hoping to add more colour options in the New Year,” says Alan Fielder, sales and marketing director at Edgetech. “We’re pleased to be supporting a long-standing customer in winning some great contracts.”

New Edgetech TruSieve Desiccant proves better in BSI test

Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has made it even easier for glass manufacturers to make better IGUs with the launch of top quality TruSieve 3A molecular sieve desiccant.

TruSieve desiccant has a high humidity adsorption capacity to deliver long term performance within the insulated glass unit. To see just how good TruSieve is, the British Standards Institute was commissioned to carry out comparison tests against desiccant from leading suppliers. The test results showed the initial moisture content of TruSieve is as much as 38 percent better and moisture adsorption capacity is up to 18 percent greater. This makes TruSieve one of the most stable spacer bar desiccants on the market.

Edgetech already supplies a range of component products to make glass units more efficiently. They include Super Spacer and TruPlas warm edge spacer systems, TruPlas SDL and Bostik Hotmelt sealant.

“As their IGU solutions partner we wanted to offer customers a desiccant that would give optimum performance without additional costs,” says Alan Fielder, Edgetech’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “It also means manufacturers can order all the components they need to make a glass unit in one delivery from us.”

TruSieve desiccant is now in stock and available in both standard and millibead sizes. Over the next few
months more products will be added to Edgetech’s growing range of solutions for IGU manufacturers.

New Supply Chain Expertise for Edgetech

As Edgetech UK, a Quanex Company, adds four new products for IGU manufacturers, window fabricators and installers, a new role is created to support customers. The position of Commercial Supply Chain Manager has been filled by David Relph who comes with over 10 years of experience in operations and logistics.

David will use his previous experience in warehouse and project management to develop and implement strategies that continue to improve processes in Edgetech’s Coventry-based manufacturing and distribution centre.

“I’ve joined Edgetech at an exciting time for the business as it launches Super Spacer Alpha, TruFit, TruShield and TruSieve,” comments David. “The success of TruPlas rigid warm edge spacer bar has already grown our customer base significantly and the recent launch of TruPlas SDL has seen us handling more complex orders.

“I’m looking forward to liaising with customers to ensure we keep exceeding their expectations on service as we continue to grow the product range.”

Edgetech celebrates its 25 anniversary with four new products

Building on its reputation for adding value to glazing Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, launched an exciting range of products for the manufacture and installation of value added windows at its 25th anniversary celebrations at Great John Street Hotel in Manchester.

Edgetech has been at the forefront of top energy efficient windows for 25 years, and this year it’s expanded its product range for companies looking for ways to enhance their glazing or installation offering. Already this year, Edgetech has added TruPlas and TruPlas SDL to its ever expanding product portfolio, and now there are four more products creating new opportunities for IGU manufacturers, fabricators and installers.

At its product launch in Manchester on 8 October, Edgetech showed guests the new additions Super Spacer Alpha, TruFit, TruSieve and TruShield.

“These new products are designed to support customers and dealers, enabling them to differentiate themselves with next generation, high performance products,” said Andy Jones, Managing Director of Edgetech UK.

At the launch official thermal test results for its new foam spacer were revealed as 0.13W/m2K, making Super Spacer Alpha the best performing warm edge spacer in the world.

Edgetech also launched TruFit, warm edge for windows. It’s an expanding tape that perfectly seals around the frame to the brickwork making the complete installation energy efficient and weathertight. So much of the UK’s housing stock is older and it’s difficult to get a good fit all round. TruFit reduces heat loss by up to 23 percent at the edge of the frame and saves up to 20 percent fitting time making it cost effective for both homeowner and installer.

During the presentation there was a live demonstration to show how fast, easy and clean TruFit is to install.

TruSieve desiccant was the third product addition. It gives IGU manufacturers a reliable and superior quality desiccant with high adsorption capacity keeping the unit free from moisture.

The final product was TruShield. It is a high quality coating that bonds to glass and makes it easy to clean. Unlike many other products, TruShield doesn’t depend on specific environmental conditions. This means it will work in all locations, including north-facing windows as well as those in the sun, so the benefits will be seen even on shaded glass.

The product launch was part of the silver jubilee celebrations as Edgetech celebrates its 25th anniversary on 1 December 2014. Joined by long standing customers, suppliers and press, Edgetech’s guests enjoyed spectacular views of the Manchester skyline from the rooftop of Great John Street Hotel.

Guest and longstanding customer Adrian Barraclough, Quickslide’s CEO, added: “It’s evident that
Edgetech is in business for the long term and it’s very comforting to have a partner company who is at
the top of their game and continuously looking for ways to improve our industry efficiencies.”

Edgetech searches for Top Gun

As part of its 25 year celebrations, Edgetech UK, a Quanex company is giving the industry’s Super Spacer applicators their dream shot! A chance to go up against the best at Top Gun, Coventry.

Can you beat Edgetech’s longest serving technical engineer, Karl Jones to be Top Gun? Or is your ego writing cheques your body can’t cash?

Putting quotes from the 1980s film aside, the Top Gun competition to find the fastest Super Spacer applicator in the UK was launched on Edgetech’s stand at the FIT Show 2014. Karl set the benchmark for the competition at just 34 seconds to make a sealed unit.

Anyone wishing to challenge Karl’s Top Gun crown can enter the competition by contacting Edgetech. The best Super Spacer applicators will get their shot at the live final going head to head with Karl at Edgetech UK’s HQ in Coventry.

The winner will be crowned Top Gun and get £500 in gift vouchers for themselves and £500 credit with Edgetech for their company. Customers will be kept up to date with Top Gun contenders close to beating Karl’s time with a regular leader board.

Managing director, Andy Jones says: “This year marks our 25th anniversary, so we wanted to launch a competition that was a bit of fun for customers and give them a chance to win some prizes. We’re looking forward to getting as many entries as possible and giving Karl some healthy competition.”
