New laboratory to accelerate Edgetech innovation

Technical development manager - Gary Shoesmith

Warm-edge experts Edgetech are gearing up for future innovation with the opening of a new research laboratory.

Situated at the company’s Coventry headquarters, it’s been built to enable Edgetech to develop new products, assist customers in meeting accreditation and compliance requirements, and generally distribute technical expertise more widely throughout the company.

Thanks to parent company Quanex, Edgetech is already blessed with world-class testing facilities in Akron, Ohio – but this is the first time the firm has had the capacity to develop products independently in the UK.

“The demands placed on IGU manufacturers are growing all the time,” comments Technical Development Manager Gary Shoesmith.

“They’re caught in a squeeze between the increasingly stringent standards demanded of them by governments and regulators, and their customers and end-users wanting exceptional performance for ever-more competitive prices.

“On top of that, we’re seeing more and more volatility in the supply chain. Raw material prices have risen, sometimes quite substantially, in the wake of Brexit – and, most pressingly of all at the moment, the silicone shortage is causing headaches throughout the industry.

“At Edgetech, we take these issues extremely seriously – and now, thanks to the new laboratory, I’m spending a significant amount of time and resources on helping our customers respond.

“At the time of writing, I’m evaluating no less than five potential new products, capable of delivering the same outstanding performance the industry has come to expect from us, using materials that are more readily available.”

Managing Director Chris Alderson comments: “This is a major milestone for Edgetech – and with it, we’ll be able to help our customers face up to the challenges of the modern marketplace better than ever before.”

Edgetech champions efficiency and innovation at Fensterbau Frontale

World-leading warm-edge experts Edgetech have returned from a highly successful Fensterbau Frontale.

PR201 - Edgetech Team - Fensterbau 2018Widely acknowledged as the world’s biggest and best fenestration expo, Fensterbau routinely attracts hundreds of thousands of glazing experts from all around the world.

Regular exhibitors at the Nuremberg event, Edgetech have been a pioneering force in the field of high-performance glazing for more than thirty years, and its stand showcased the excellence and innovation that have made it a respected name throughout global construction.

With Super Spacer, thousands of IGU manufacturers have been able to substantially increase energy efficiency and overall unit performance – and with the advent of automation, and ever tighter environmental regulations, outstanding spacer technology is more vital than ever, as Edgetech UK Managing Director Chris Alderson explains:

“Last year we showcased at major glazing events all over the world, and this year we’re doing the same – visiting Germany, India and China among other destinations. And wherever we go, we find more interest in warm-edge products than ever.

“In large part, I think that’s down to the growing appeal of automation for IGU manufacturers. Exceptional thermal performance is now the norm – between 70 and 80% of sealed units now incorporate warm edge technology, compared to just 5% in 2007.

“That’s led to rapidly rising demand for products capable of delivering the very best thermal efficiency – and, in turn, to many firms embracing automation as a way of keeping pace. With companies like Edgetech able to offer automated lines that can produce an IGU every twenty seconds, the efficiency gains are obvious.

“At Fensterbau, it was great to be able to discuss issues like these with IGU manufacturers from all over the world, and we look forward to developing the new contacts we made into lasting, mutually profitable relationships.”

Edgetech’s Super Spacer is the leading foam warm edge spacer product on the market, offering easy application, 100% memory and exceptional thermal efficiency and condensation resistance.

The firm also manufactures an extensive range of other flexible components, including its commercial-focused TriSeal and T-Spacer and conservation-friendly Heritage product, as well as a number of rigid products.

Super Spacer Alpha wins Manufacturing Innovation Award

Launched just six months ago, Super Spacer Alpha® has won Manufacturing Innovation of the year in
Insider’s Made in the Midlands Awards. The new premium warm edge flexible spacer bar manufactured
by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, took the top spot for innovation.

“To win for a brand new product is superb,” says Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing, who collected the winning trophy at the award ceremony on 20 May. “Super Spacer Alpha’s innovative design came through reverse engineering Super Spacer. We developed a new profile shape, creating the most thermally efficient spacer bar. The design is set to provide major benefits to customers and manufacturers using it can make highly energy efficient units without any increase in cost.”

Super Spacer Alpha offers improved performance and creates a strong reason for manufacturers upgrading equipment to switch over. Edgetech already has advance orders valued at £1 million a year.

The Midlands is at the heart of UK manufacturing and competition for the award was strong. This was recognised by the award organisers Insider Media. Of Edgetech’s winning product, Super Spacer Alpha, judges wrote: “Coventry-based Edgetech’s latest innovation is the most thermally efficient insulated glass unit spacer bar in the world, giving customers up to 66 percent increase in productivity and 20 percent reduction in sealant usage. The judges were delighted to see so many companies putting innovation at the heart of their businesses. But Edgetech’s work in the glazing industry gave it the real edge.”

Edgetech’s Marketing Manager Charlotte Davies joined Alan to collect the coveted prize from host Declan Curry at the NEC’s Hilton Metropole at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 20 May. For a full list of winners and finalists go to:

New Edgetech TruSieve Desiccant proves better in BSI test

Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has made it even easier for glass manufacturers to make better IGUs with the launch of top quality TruSieve 3A molecular sieve desiccant.

TruSieve desiccant has a high humidity adsorption capacity to deliver long term performance within the insulated glass unit. To see just how good TruSieve is, the British Standards Institute was commissioned to carry out comparison tests against desiccant from leading suppliers. The test results showed the initial moisture content of TruSieve is as much as 38 percent better and moisture adsorption capacity is up to 18 percent greater. This makes TruSieve one of the most stable spacer bar desiccants on the market.

Edgetech already supplies a range of component products to make glass units more efficiently. They include Super Spacer and TruPlas warm edge spacer systems, TruPlas SDL and Bostik Hotmelt sealant.

“As their IGU solutions partner we wanted to offer customers a desiccant that would give optimum performance without additional costs,” says Alan Fielder, Edgetech’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “It also means manufacturers can order all the components they need to make a glass unit in one delivery from us.”

TruSieve desiccant is now in stock and available in both standard and millibead sizes. Over the next few
months more products will be added to Edgetech’s growing range of solutions for IGU manufacturers.

Quanex Demonstrates Why it’s the Best Bet for Innovation

The building product giant and parent company of Edgetech, Quanex, is pleased to be helping companies meet the relevant standards with its innovative product range and will be showing visitors to the GlassBuild show in Las Vegas exactly why it is the best bet for innovation.

As in the UK, there are a lot of changes happening in the US fenestration industry and as a result many are looking for new, cost-effective ways to meet the anticipated ENERGY STAR requirements. At GlassBuild 2012, stop by booth #1127 and see Quanex unveil its winning hand with its EnergyQuest Window & Door System. As part of its ‘Innovation Zone’ at the company’s GlassBuild booth, EnergyQuest will give those manufacturers looking to redesign and retool their products additional options to achieve the proposed 2014 U-factors from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

For some manufacturers, meeting the new ENERGY STAR standards will be relatively simple, but for some with older designs, it may require an entirely new window system, said Mark Gallant, senior product marketing manager, Quanex Building Products. With our EnergyQuest system, we’re helping our customers meet the new standards by providing a high-performance system at a fair price point. This will be especially important for those struggling to accommodate the change for the Northern zone target U-factor of 0.25-0.27.
Available in double-hung, single-hung, slider, patio door, casement and picture window options, EnergyQuest is designed to accommodate either double- or triple-glazed insulating glass units up to 1 1/8-inch thick, and will be offered with or without an extruded nail fin for fast and easy installation. It will also come standard with Quanex’s exclusive SuperCoat UV-cured technology, a color coating that is seven times harder than competitive paint options, making it the most durable applied coating available for PVC windows and doors. SuperCoat is available in six colors, including black, architectural bronze, brick red, adobe, hunter green and gray.

Working with our OEM partners, we identified an opportunity to create a high-performance window system that will provide the market with long-term energy savings, versatility, and aesthetic appeal, Gallant said. In addition to our exclusive, top performance EnergyCore fusion-insulated window system, we can now offer customers a mid-range window and door system with multiple accessory options that ideally targets replacement applications.

At its GlassBuild booth, Quanex will also feature other new innovations from its Window & Door Systems, IG Systems and Engineered Components groups, including the Top-Hung Extruded Patio Screen Door. The system provides a smooth interface with an aluminum track head and is universally designed to easily mount to either vinyl or wood patio doors.

Edgetech Wins German NRW-INVEST AWARD 2011 for Innovation

Edgetech, manufacturer of the leading Super Spacer warm edge technology, is delighted to add to its growing list of accolades with the NRW-INVEST Award for Innovation 2011. The annual awards held this week in Duesseldorf are presented to companies that have really shone in the arenas of innovation, investment, marketing and product development.
Andy Jones, Edgetech’s European Managing Director, who accepted the award from the NRW Economic Minister at the ceremony attended by more than 500 guests comments: “We are delighted with this fantastic third party endorsement of the success we’ve achieved since opening our third global WET manufacturing facility in Heinsberg, Germany. It’s particularly appropriate to win the Award for Innovation as it’s precisely this continuous improvement and innovation in products and services that has driven our growth. We’ve always been focused on solving problems – and one of the biggest challenges facing all of us today, is that of energy efficiency and energy security. Edgetech’s Super Spacer is helping our customers contribute to solving this global challenge in a cost effective way that makes commercial sense to their businesses. This award proves that we are achieivng just this, and we look forward to continuing to work with our customers and the market across Europe as we aim to double our production by 2015.”

The Best Just Got Even Better

Edgetech, the most cost effective Warm Edge Technology in the UK, is pleased to announce that the approved thermal conductivity figures for its Super Spacer product have just got even better. Andy Jones, Managing Director of Edgetech explains: “In July 2009 the British Fenestration Ratings Council instructed all spacer suppliers to submit proof of product performance to EN675. Unlike other WET suppliers, Edgetech submitted its information straight away and are thrilled that the thermal conductivity figures are even better than previously stated. The improved figures are proof of our commitment to the continuous development of our products. It is this continued investment into our products, and the complete business support package that comes with it, that is keeping our customers ahead in our competitive market.

“EN 675 is the standard specifically relating to the thermal transmittance (U-value) of glass in a building using the heat flow meter method. Edgetech’s Super Spacer has always been one of the highest performing Warm Edge Technologies available, but with its figures getting even better, our customers can be confident we’ll keep them ahead of changing legislation and market demand.”
