Super Spacer soars in Denmark’s eco-friendly Maersk Tower

Super Spacer TriSeal has formed a crucial part of one of Europe’s most eco-friendly buildings.

The Maersk Tower, home to the medical laboratories of the University of Copenhagen, was built in line with Denmark’s historic commitment to becoming 100% carbon neutral by 2050.

It became an instant landmark when it was completed last year thanks to its striking copper shell, the work of superstar architects C. F. Møller and Vienna engineering experts Waagner-Biro.

The futuristic structure incorporates resource-saving measures that include automatic LED lighting, a state-of-the-art eco-friendly cooling system, and rainwater collection for toilet flushing and garden irrigation.

Three-thousand vertical copper-clad fins act as both solar shading and wind protection for the building’s 15 storeys of cylindrically curved triple-glazed facades – where Edgetech’s Super Spacer TriSeal plays a critical role in delivering the building’s exceptional thermal efficiency.

“The Maersk Tower is an outstanding example of how the smallest of components – in this case, warm-edge spacer – can have such a huge impact on a building’s overall performance,” comments Edgetech’s Head of Marketing Charlotte Mercer.

“Together with the stunning glass provided by Berlin-based Glasbiegerei Doring, Super Spacer has helped the building achieve U-values as low as 0.5 W/m2k.

“The sort of curved units that were used on this project demand precise, absolutely parallel application, and that made Super Spacer TriSeal the perfect choice.

“What’s more, Super Spacer’s reflective surface means it completely disappears from view when installed in the frame profile, allowing it to offer world-class performance without compromising the Tower’s dazzling aesthetics.”

The structure has won the Scandinavian Green Roof Prize 2017, the Copenhagen City Architecture Award 2018, the World Architecture Festival Award 2017 in the Higher Education and Research category, and the European Copper in Architecture Award 2017.

Super Spacer Heritage moves into million pound apartments

Slenderpane Ltd has installed 450 slim sash windows using Edgetech's Super Spacer® Heritage for award winning developer, Linden Homes' refurbishment of Ashlar Court into luxury apartments in Hammersmith.

With apartment prices starting at £750,000, Linden Homes demanded traditional timber windows in keeping with the 1930s Art Deco Grade II listed building that would also deliver better energy efficiency. Using Super Spacer Heritage from Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, Slenderpane was able to replicate the aesthetics of the existing single pane windows with new slim double glazed timber sash windows from sister company Herald Joinery.

The development has won high praise and has been commended in The Sunday Times British Home Awards 2014 and What House? Awards 2014.

David Weston, Managing Director of Slenderpane explains: "By combining bespoke joinery with Super Spacer Heritage slim insulated glass units we were able to closely match the original windows. This helped us to beat the competition offering standard window designs.

"Customers like the aesthetics of what we do and a big part of that is down to the slim design, low sightlines and neutral appearance we can achieve using Super Spacer Heritage. Since completing Ashlar Court we have won a second contract with Linden Homes for 80 slim double glazed sash windows for new housing in the regeneration of Battersea Police Station."

There's growing demand from architects and developers to improve thermal efficiency of windows in conservation refurbishment. David adds: "With Super Spacer Heritage we can offer glass units down to 11mm wide. We have used it since Slenderpane started making slim units in 2010."

Edgetech has now launched a white version of Super Spacer Heritage to create the most authentic appearance possible for period style windows.

Edgetech's Super Spacer Keeps the Black Horse Warm

UK manufacturer of the most cost effective Warm Edge Technology, Edgetech has supplied its Super Spacer WET for the sealed units used in the Black Horse Hotel in Kent. The Inn and its on site Bed and Breakfast accommodation has benefited from a refurbishment programme over the last five years which included the updating of the timber windows in its 30 chalets – all of which use Super Spacer for improved energy efficiency and a more comfortable stay for guests. Mel Jones, Edgetech's Business Development Manager for the area explains: “The refurbishment programme was carried out by local builder Artizan and the windows were supplied by Magnet. It's great that Edgetech's Super Spacer has been used for this project as not only can guests now benefit from improved energy efficiency, they can also benefit from the overall improved aesthetics of the windows. On projects that involve older properties like the Black Horse, ensuring the windows are in keeping with the rest of the building is essential. Edgetech works with timber window companies nationwide to do just this. We have also recently launched our Super Spacer Heritage product which goes even further – it still has the high performance Edgetech's Super Spacer customers expect but its ultra slim sightlines makes it ideal for the restoration and renovation sectors.”

The Black Horse Inn near Maidstone in Kent dates back to the 18th Century and the thirty en-suite bed and breakfast rooms are located in a separate annex.
