Edgetech, the only dedicated manufacturer of Warm Edge Technology in the UK, has launched a brand new version of its WER:DIY programme – the Window Energy Rating (WER) assessment calculator for fabricators. “We launched WER:DIY as a joint initiative with Pilkington back in 2007 to help fabricators understand what they would need to do to achieve A, B or C energy rated windows,” explains Edgetech Managing Director, Andy Jones. “WERs have really gathered pace since then but there are still plenty of companies that are looking for advice on the energy rating they could achieve with their existing profile. The new version of WER:DIY includes 3 Warm Edge Technology products from Edgetech; Pilkington K Optiwhite; an aluminium system from Sapa; more PVC systems than ever before, including products that include thermal inserts. With these new additions the calculator now contains 12,870 combinations of materials and technologies across 16 different window systems and has 99 IG specifications per frame type. This is almost double the amount of combinations we had in WER:DIY Version 1. This wide range of options allows fabricators of all systems to see how their individual windows perform against the BFRC ratings and how they could perform by changing individual components of their window. WER:DIY is a free and easy service that gives users access to all of this information in just a minute.”
Edgetech customer, E.A.S Windows in Oadby, has joined Edgetech’s Super Spacer Dealership to show its commitment to offering high standard energy efficient windows. “We’ve been offering B and C energy rated windows with Cleartherm sealed units with Super Spacer inside since 2008,” explains Adam Spradbury, Managing Director of E.A.S Windows. “Energy efficiency has always been a selling point for PVC-U double glazed windows, but the latest technology and energy rated windows have added further credence to this selling proposition. Consumers can now compare one window’s energy performance with another on a like for like basis, as they do with their white goods such as fridges, freezers and dishwashers. With fuel bills looking set to increase again this winter, there has never been a better time to be selling energy efficient products into the home. Being part of Edgetech’s Super Spacer Dealership helps us to do this effectively with the business and marketing support it offers.
“It’s not just domestic customers that are looking for green alternatives either – we’ve seen great interest from the commercial sector too. We’ve recently completed the installations of five circular windows at the newly refurbished and extended Foundry Campus at Leicester College. We were also awarded a contract for 250 windows in two 1930’s mansion blocks within one of Leicester’s conservation areas. Energy efficiency is a requirement for all our customers and we’re pleased to be able to offer them the best possible solution for all their needs.”
E.A.S is a family run company that will be celebrating 30 years in business next year. It manufactures and installs windows in the commercial, trade and retail sectors.
Consumers were disgruntled to say the least last winter when their fuel bills rose to unmanageable levels. Gas customers were faced with a 35% increase on their annual energy bills and electricity customers a 9% increase. The bad news is recent news reports suggest we might be facing further increases this winter.
According to Greenpeace, which has seen a draft of the Government’s plans which are about to be set out in detail, the estimated cost of meeting the renewable energy target will be 7pound100bn. This is the amount of funding needed for a new energy infrastructure, including 7,000 more wind turbines. This translates to an additional cost to the consumer of 25 per cent on gas bills and 17 per cent on electricity bills.
This level of increase in the cost of fuel is bound to give consumers a further push to take steps to improve the energy efficiency of their home. While worrying news for all of us as homeowners, it does give consumers looking to buy new windows an even bigger incentive to opt for the energy rated option. Installers with windows rated C and above are therefore in an even better position to take advantage of this development.
The latest suggested revisions to Part L of the Building Regulations will force all installers to sell C or higher rated windows anyway, so surely it’s better to get the attacker’s advantage now. For those not yet selling energy rated windows, it’s a great time to start. And for those that are selling energy rated windows, what better angle for your winter marketing campaign – to install C (or above) rated windows now?

Zenith Staybrite Ltd, one of the best known names in home improvements with a turnover in excess of £40 million, has named Super Spacer as its Warm Edge Technology of choice. Andrew Stone, Technical Services Manager of Zenith Staybrite Ltd explains why: “Zenith Staybrite Ltd has invested a lot of time, money and effort into creating a comprehensive range of green products, including energy efficient windows. We wanted to push the boundaries of our products’ performance and create a high specification window to meet our customer’s stringent security and energy saving expectations. The criteria we used to choose the right spacer for the job included performance, availability, price and practicality. Super Spacer allowed us to embrace the leading edge high performance technology we wanted without increasing the cost to the end user.
“Energy efficient products are clearly the future, especially as the next building regulations are almost certain to include a requirement for at least a C rated Window Energy Rating in the replacement window sector. We wanted to future proof our products and customers using those products by launching our Zenith Energy Saver Plus window now. The double glazing industry has always offered a more energy efficient option, but now we need to fine tune our products’ performance to meet future legislation and end user demand for greener goods.”
Zenith Staybrite Ltd has also joined the Super Spacer Dealership. “We are a well established company too and pride ourselves on outstanding customer service, not just before, during and directly after the installation, but for the entire warranty period too,” continues Andrew. “It’s often in this time customers look for support and back-up and we want to provide them with this high level of service to ensure our excellent reputation is maintained. The Super Spacer Dealership typifies quality, high standards and all round support. It is the ‘perfect fit’ for our approach to business and enables us to tap into Edgetech’s considerable training and marketing resources to ensure that we remain at the forefront of the domestic window sector.”
Zenith’s energy efficient window is the first product in a series of green product launches to come from the company so watch this space!
Edgetech, the only dedicated Warm Edge Technology manufacturer in the UK, has secured a place in the Construction Products Association Innovation and Achievement Showcase 2009 for its Super Spacer TriSeal product. “We’re delighted to have been included in the showcase, taking our place along side other big names like Marley, Knauf Insulation and Hanson,” says Edgetech Managing Director, Andy Jones. “To win this accolade, we had to prove why TriSeal is different and innovative and the real benefits it offers the end user, namely its improvement in thermal conductivity over and above other Warm Edge products of up to 50%. With such tough competition across the entire construction industry, we’re thrilled that Edgetech is representing its customers in this field.”
Ian Lucas, Minister for Business at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills commented on the showcase: “I want to start by saying how encouraged and impressed I am by the resilience and determination construction firms have shown over the past 12 months. The CPA Innovation and Achievement showcase is evidence that Britain is still a nation of innovators, delivering products and solutions that will shape the industry in the years ahead.”
For the third year in a row, Edgetech I.G. has been recognised as one of Inc. 5000?s fastest growing companies in the United States with 19.5% sales growth from 2005 to 2008. The Inc. 5000 is an extension of Inc. magazine’s annual Inc. 500 list.

According to Edgetech’s President, Mike Hovan, “We have the processes, products and personnel in place to maintain our leadership position in the industry for the years to come. But honours, such as making the Inc. 5000 list for three years in a row, serve as a reminder to thank those who have contributed to Edgetech’s continued success for more than 20 years – our employees and our customers. They are trendsetters who represent the best of the industry and it is because of them we continue to grow and seek new ways to add value to the industry.”

Installers in the Network have access to a 20 year warranty, fast track WER scheme, retail brochures, consumer DVDs, an easy to use plug in for installers’ websites on WERs and the opportunity to buy Super Spacer windows as standard from a Dealership Fabricator. All Dealership members can of course also use the scheme logo for their own marketing too.”

“Edgetech believes in investing in the industry as a whole as well as its customers,” explains Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edgetech. “The G09 exhibitions offer the perfect chance to do just that, so we are once again taking the opportunity to demonstrate our products and complete solution for sealed unit manufacturers, fabricators and installers at this important show. We will be highlighting our full business support package – 360, as well as the continuing importance of Window Energy Ratings in light of the changes to the Building Regulations currently in consultation. Edgetech representatives will be on hand to discuss any specific questions or enquiries about Window Energy Ratings, high performance insulated glass units, warm edge technology or selling more windows in the current market conditions.
“Edgetech is also supporting the G09 Awards, taking place after the Wembley exhibition because we think it’s important that amongst all the doom and gloom we give recognition to the companies that have done something special, grown their sales and continued to drive their business forward while others have pulled back. If you’re attending the event come and see us on stand 22 on Wednesday 30th September and Thursday 1st October and if you’re entering an award – good luck!”
Warm Edge Technology specialist, Edgetech, is pleased to congratulate the three employees that have raised £1,589 so far, for taking part in the nationwide event, Race for Life. Charlotte Davies, Natalya Vavan and Gemma Hinks ran the 5k Race for Life at Coombe Abbey in Coventry last Wednesday evening with 2500 other women. “The three of us dressed in pink 80’s style clothes and Gemma even braved a pair of wellies for the duration of the race!” says Charlotte Davies, Sales and Marketing Adviser at Edgetech. “We wanted to get involved in this worthwhile charity event for Cancer Research UK. The charity is the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research and supports research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses. Over the past 10 years alone, thousands of lives have been saved through earlier detection and improved treatments. But there’s still a lot of work to do for the charity to achieve its aim of beating cancer.
“We’re still working to achieve our £2,000 fundraising target but are really grateful for all the support we’ve had from friends and colleagues so far.”
