Triple Passive House Certification for Edgetech UK

Edgetech UK, the leading voice for energy efficient windows, has been accredited with Passive House certification for three of its Super Spacer® products, reflecting its total commitment to energy performance in buildings.

Super Spacer Premium has been certified with the Passive House Institute’s best available energy efficiency class stamp of phA+ whilst Super Spacer TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium and Super Spacer TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium Plus have both been accredited with phA standard.

All three of Edgetech’s spacer bars significantly exceeded the required minimum specific edge resistance and were certified for the Arctic climate component efficiency class stamp, as well as for all climate zones with lower demands.

Alan Fielder, Sales & Marketing Director at Edgetech UK said: “I’m delighted to hear that the Passive House Institute has recognised that these spacer bars are eligible for use under the Passive House standard – a simple approach to building super energy efficient homes.”

While Passive House only accounts for a small percentage of buildings in the UK, many more developers and specifiers look for products that offer top thermal efficiency.

The Passive House Institute also considers hygiene when certifying spacer bar components.
By reducing condensation and maintaining comfortable humidity levels, Super Spacer can
virtually eliminate the potential breeding ground for mould growth and associated health
problems. Super Spacer’s qualities have made it popular for hospitals and medical facilities
all over the world.

Alan continues: “This acknowledgement from the Passive House Institute further secures
Edgetech’s place as the leading voice for energy efficient windows.”

Edgetech Honoured to Receive a National Fenestration Award

Edgetech UK, the leading voice for energy efficiency in glazing, has won the 2015 National Fenestration Award for Spacer Bar Manufacturer, topping off an exceptional award-winning year.

“2015 has been a fantastic year for Edgetech,” says Sales and Marketing Director Alan Fielder. “And it’s a real honour to be recognised with a National Fenestration Award, since it is voted for by fellow glazing industry professionals.”

Edgetech won its NFA with 47.8% of the open-platform vote.

“The National Fenestration Awards are a real measure of how the industry views a business and I’m really proud that we’ve managed to add this title to our 2015 award wins,” continues Alan.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for us and to Jason Grafton-Holt, better known as the Double Glazing Blogger for organising such a great industry participation event as the NFAs.”

The NFA winners’ event will be held in early 2016 at Oulton Park Circuit in Cheshire.

Edgetech wins Customer Care Initiative at G15s

Winning the coveted G15 for Customer Care Initiative has rounded off an impressive 2015 awards haul for Edgetech UK, a Quanex company. Four of the Edgetech team collected the award from top comedian Jason Manford at the prestigious ceremony at the Hilton on Park Lane. Edgetech won for its Dealership Plus comprehensive support package.

“Customer Care Initiative is the best award we could win because it recognises our commitment to customers,” says Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edgetech. “We don’t act like an average component supplier and the winning entry for Dealership Plus is a great example of that.

“The scheme is there to support customers, wherever they are in the supply chain. The amount of additional compliance and legislation has been huge over the past few years. So what we’ve done is create a system that keeps everything in one place to make it as simple as possible for customers. It gives them access to the experts they need, and it will keep them up to date with any changes. We are especially pleased how well it’s going down with customers already.

“G15 organiser Tony Higgin told the 600-strong audience at evening dinner that the competition was highly contested this year, so it’s even more of an achievement to win. It was a brilliant night, Jason Manford was an excellent host and it’s always fantastic to see so many of the great and good supporting the successes of the industry.”

2015 has been an exceptional award-winning year for Edgetech. As well as the G15 award, Edgetech has won Manufacturing Innovation from Made in the Midlands; Manufacturing from Coventry Telegraph Business Awards; and a Best Business Award.

Alan Fielder collected the G15 trophy. He was joined on stage by Managing Director Andy Jones, Marketing Manager Charlotte Davies and Marketing Assistant Krishma Patel.

Double G Award finalist for Edgetech

Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has been named as a double G Award finalist for both the
Customer Care Initiative of the Year and Component Supplier of the Year.

It has been an exciting year for Edgetech. Five new products were added to the range, its
first IGU components centre opened in Burnley and Dealership Plus, the most
comprehensive customer support package that covers IGU manufacturers, window and door
fabricators and installers was introduced.

“To be finalists in two categories is brilliant,” says Andy Jones, Managing Director. “We are
especially pleased to be nominated for Customer Care Initiative for Dealership Plus. We could see many customers getting more and more bogged down with red tape, so we launched the scheme to make it easier and quicker for companies to comply with current legislation, and keep them updated with any changes. There’s also the Thermal Ratings Register for cost effective and easy window energy ratings, insurance backed guarantees and TrustMark. All that’s in addition to the marketing and sales support that customers have come to rely on us for.”

The nomination for Component Supplier of the Year recognises Edgetech’s growth from supplier of a single product to a major supplier of all fundamental components required for IG manufacture in the last 12 months. Since launching the double award winning Super Spacer Alpha® the world’s best performing spacer bar, TruShield® glass protection system, TruPlas® SDL and TruSieve® desiccant last October, Edgetech has also added a range of ancillaries for IGU manufacturers which includes Georgian bar, lead, cloth tape and aluminium spacer bar.

In the same year, Edgetech brought the revolutionary TruFit® perimeter edge expanding foam installation tape, which is already taking the market by storm. The new tape makes a neat and weather tight seal around windows and doors and gives consistently better thermal efficiency.

Andy adds: “We are looking forward to seeing the finalists from all the categories at the award presentation on Friday 27 November at the London Hilton hotel on Park Lane.”

Edgetech has scooped a second Manufacturing Award

Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has scooped its second award for manufacturing in the Coventry Telegraph Business Awards within just five weeks of winning Manufacturing Innovation in Made in the Midlands. Edgetech has again proved its credentials as a leading UK manufacturer.

Since 2007 Edgetech has manufactured Super Spacer® from its Coventry base and supports customers who manufacture over 30,000 insulated glass units per working day in the UK. In the last year, it has also expanded its ‘Just Add Glass’ range of products making it one of the biggest suppliers of IGU components.
“Being recognised for manufacturing excellence in our home city is a fantastic accolade for the production
team at Edgetech,” says John Stark, Edgetech’s Works Manager who collected the award at the
ceremony at the Ricoh Arena.
Manufacturing is at the heart of Edgetech and its latest product Super Spacer Alpha® was highlighted as
an example of innovation in the award. Designed in-house by reverse engineering its top selling Super
Spacer, Alpha’s new chamfered shape is designed to make the manufacturing process easier and
quicker and, at the same time, reduces sealant usage by 20 percent. It has high levels of energy
efficiency with a thermal transmittance of 0.13W/m2K, making it the best performing spacer bar in the

“Competition for the awards was high as the Midlands is the strongest region in the UK for manufacturing, which makes winning even sweeter,” adds John.

At the ceremony Coventry Telegraph editor Keith Perry said: “We have a long history of innovation in the area and we’ve been able to prove tonight that firms based here are still at the forefront of many industries and creating new jobs and wealth for the people who live here.”

Wellness wins award for Edgetech's team

Free fruit, cooking demos, help to stop smoking and onsite health checks are just part of the wellness programme at Edgetech UK, a Quanex Company. This commitment to the wellbeing of its employees and the dedication of HR Manager, Suzanne Shelbourne, to health means Edgetech has been awarded the Workplace Wellbeing Charter at Achievement level for all areas, including leadership, communication, absence management and general wellbeing. Edgetech initially achieved Charter status in 2013 with the local Charter programme and has now achieved higher recognition through the National Charter.

Over the last four years Edgetech has been supporting staff to encourage them to make positive lifestyle choices, alongside continually improving their internal policies to ensure best practise within all the areas of the Charter.

“The team get really involved with the events we put on throughout the year,” says Suzanne. “Whether it’s cooking competitions or team lunches to sample healthy foods we’re always looking to create the best environment possible to work in at Edgetech. The programme is especially important for our shift workers, as the manufacturing facility runs 24 hours a day, five days a week. Irregular sleeping and eating patterns can make it harder to pick positive lifestyle choices.

“We have had visible results. Feedback on the programme for 2014 reported over 80% of staff felt they’d benefitted and over half saw medical health improvements. Looking out for the wellbeing of team members is a positive step for everyone. People feel more engaged, which leads to lower staff turnover rates and absence rates have reduced to less than one percent.”

Such is the success of the programme that Suzanne was asked to present at the recent Workplace Wellbeing Charter Awards event, covering the business case study for an SME with Charter recognition, to an invited audience representing more than 30 companies in the Coventry & Warwickshire region.

Charter recognition awards were presented to ten companies including Edgetech, Jaguar Land Rover Solihull, IKEA, Network Rail and Brett Martin. Edgetech was one of only two organisations that attained Achievement level in all areas.

“Being awarded Charter status proves we offer our team members the highest levels of support,” adds Edgetech’s Managing Director, Andy Jones. “The results speak for themselves: Edgetech is a healthy and happy place to work.

Super Spacer Alpha wins Manufacturing Innovation Award

Launched just six months ago, Super Spacer Alpha® has won Manufacturing Innovation of the year in
Insider’s Made in the Midlands Awards. The new premium warm edge flexible spacer bar manufactured
by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, took the top spot for innovation.

“To win for a brand new product is superb,” says Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing, who collected the winning trophy at the award ceremony on 20 May. “Super Spacer Alpha’s innovative design came through reverse engineering Super Spacer. We developed a new profile shape, creating the most thermally efficient spacer bar. The design is set to provide major benefits to customers and manufacturers using it can make highly energy efficient units without any increase in cost.”

Super Spacer Alpha offers improved performance and creates a strong reason for manufacturers upgrading equipment to switch over. Edgetech already has advance orders valued at £1 million a year.

The Midlands is at the heart of UK manufacturing and competition for the award was strong. This was recognised by the award organisers Insider Media. Of Edgetech’s winning product, Super Spacer Alpha, judges wrote: “Coventry-based Edgetech’s latest innovation is the most thermally efficient insulated glass unit spacer bar in the world, giving customers up to 66 percent increase in productivity and 20 percent reduction in sealant usage. The judges were delighted to see so many companies putting innovation at the heart of their businesses. But Edgetech’s work in the glazing industry gave it the real edge.”

Edgetech’s Marketing Manager Charlotte Davies joined Alan to collect the coveted prize from host Declan Curry at the NEC’s Hilton Metropole at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 20 May. For a full list of winners and finalists go to:

Heritage Awards blown away by Edgetech Warm Edge Technology

If you wander down the Georgian high street in the historic market town of Ludlow, you’d be forgiven for thinking each house had kept its original sash windows. Even at number 44 Mill Street, which recently scooped the prestigious Ludlow Heritage Award for its replacement double glazed, hand blown glass windows made by Sash Restoration Co (Hereford) Ltd using Edgetech’s warm edge spacer system.

When the owner of the grade II listed house decided to change the tired windows and improve acoustic and energy performance, the Ludlow Conservation Area Advisory Committee’s high standards of conservation demanded that replacement windows be in keeping with the other period properties in the area. The homeowner went straight to sash window specialists, Sash Restoration Company for advice.

Using traditional hand blown glass, 20mm solid through glazing bars and Duralite® warm edge spacer bar from Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, Sash Restoration Co created individual double glazed units in the finest timber box sash frames that are Document L compliant and achieve conservation requirements. The committee was so impressed it gave the project the Ludlow Heritage Award.

Ronnie Salisbury, Managing Director at Sash Restoration explains: “The committee and Ludlow residents are extremely protective of their history, so to have our product accepted for the project was a huge achievement, and to win an award for it is great for us.

“We’ve been using Duralite in our windows for 12 years and Edgetech has always been very supportive. They even got their hands dirty making the units and testing them.

“Edgetech’s single seal warm edge spacer provides a unique approach to solving the challenge of double glazing in conservation areas. It’s a heat processed, flexible product with low sightlines, so it follows the variable surface of the traditional hand blown glass we use perfectly. It creates a finish that is softer on the eye and makes it almost impossible to tell that it’s a double glazed unit.”

Construction Marketing Awards recognises TGQ as Best Event Finalist

One of the largest events in the glazing industry’s calendar in 2014 has received its third award nomination of the year. Triple Glazing Question (TGQ), an initiative led by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has been named as a finalist for Best Use of Events and Live Marketing in the prestigious Construction Marketing Awards 2014.

The shortlisted TGQ event brought together the entire window industry to discuss triple glazing. Over 30 companies and industry influencers supported the initiative as stakeholders, speakers and experts and it attracted unprecedented levels of interest with over 600 registered attendees. TGQ dominated the pages of the trade press with the debate about triple glazing for more than six months.

The aim of TGQ was to give companies the facts about how increased volumes of triple glazing could impact the entire supply chain, enabling businesses to make informed decisions and ensure the supply of triple glazing would be sustainable in the longer term.

Andy Jones, managing director of Edgetech UK says: “To have the Triple Glazing Question recognised as being one of the best events this year in the wider construction industry is phenomenal.

“TGQ was a great success. It gave the industry a chance to start the discussion about the challenges and opportunities of triple glazing and to get factual information and answers to prominent questions.”

Triple Glazing Question is competing against three companies for the Best use of Events and Live Marketing Award. The winners will be announced on Wednesday 3 December at an evening ceremony at Radisson Blu Hotel on Portman Square in London.
